Hana Financial Group will cancel 1,647,341 common shares on August 28, which is 0.60% of the 274,367,748 outstanding. The ₩199.8bn is what those shares cost to buy, against the ₩200bn budget the board approved on April 24, so the programme spent 99.9% of what it authorised. Purchases ran in the open market from April 27 to July 14 through Hana Securities. The count landed on 1,647,341 rather than a round number because the share price moved during the window — the company committed a sum of money, not a quantity of stock. Against a ₩37.7tn market capitalisation the cancellation is roughly 0.5%, and about 5% of FY2025 net income of ₩4.04tn. This document is itself an amendment to the July 14 filing, made for the single purpose of filling in the cancellation date, which had been left blank.
Hana Financial Group is one of South Korea's four large banking groups, alongside KB, Shinhan and Woori. Nearly all of its profit comes from Hana Bank, a commercial lender with a nationwide branch network whose earnings turn on two things: net interest margin, meaning the spread between what it pays depositors and charges borrowers, and credit costs, meaning provisions set aside against loans that may not be repaid. Around that sit smaller securities, card, insurance and asset management arms. Two features distinguish it from its domestic peers. It has the largest foreign-exchange and trade-finance franchise in Korea, a legacy of its origins as a currency-focused bank, which makes its fee income unusually sensitive to trade volumes and to the won. And it earns a larger share of profit outside Korea than any other Korean bank, with meaningful operations in Indonesia and elsewhere in Asia. For a US reader it sits roughly where a large US regional bank does in its home market, though with a much heavier weighting to corporate lending, a supervisor that intervenes far more directly in pricing and dividend policy, and a valuation that has persistently traded below book for reasons that are governance as much as financial.
