000810 Company Profile

Samsung Fire & Marine is South Korea's largest property and casualty insurer, with roughly a quarter of the domestic non-life market. Its business splits three ways, and the proportions differ from what a US reader might expect. The largest and most profitable piece is long-term insurance, meaning health, cancer, disability and accident policies sold on twenty-year-plus terms, which behave more like life products than like US property cover. Second is automobile insurance, a compulsory line whose pricing is effectively supervised by the government and whose loss ratio moves with traffic volumes, medical inflation and repair costs. Third is general insurance, the commercial fire, marine and liability business that a US reader would recognise as ordinary P&C. It also runs a growing overseas book and an asset management operation investing the float. Unlike its affiliate Samsung Life, it does not sit on a controlling block of Samsung Electronics, so its share price reflects its own underwriting and investment results rather than a group ownership chain. For a US reader it is closest to Chubb or Travelers in market position, though with a health insurance business inside it and a regulated motor line it cannot freely price.
