Samsung SDI makes rechargeable batteries and, in a much smaller second division, the specialty materials used in semiconductor and display manufacturing. Its battery business splits three ways: large-format cells for electric vehicles, sold mainly to BMW, Stellantis, Rivian and Audi rather than to a captive affiliate; batteries for energy storage systems, the container-sized installations that hold power for utilities and increasingly for AI data centres; and small cells for power tools, e-bikes and phones. It has historically positioned itself at the premium end, favouring higher-nickel and prismatic cells and refusing to chase volume at low prices, which has meant slower growth and better margins than some Korean peers in good years and heavier losses in bad ones. Joint ventures with Stellantis and General Motors are building plants in Indiana and Michigan. For a US reader it is one of three large Korean battery makers alongside LG Energy Solution and SK On, competing directly with China's CATL and BYD, and its earnings swing hard with electric vehicle demand, US tax credit policy, and the price of lithium and nickel.
