LG Energy Solution is the largest battery maker outside China and the second largest in the world. It was spun out of LG Chem in 2020 and listed in January 2022 in what remains the biggest initial public offering in South Korean history; LG Chem still holds a controlling stake, so the free float is small relative to the market capitalisation. Its customers are the vehicle makers rather than a captive affiliate: General Motors, Stellantis, Honda, Hyundai, Tesla and Volkswagen among them, several through joint venture plants it co-owns and operates in Ohio, Tennessee, Michigan and Arizona. That US manufacturing footprint is the centre of the investment case, because production tax credits under US law pay a per-kilowatt-hour subsidy on cells made in America, and those credits have at times exceeded the company's entire reported operating profit. Alongside electric vehicle cells it is building a large energy storage business for grid and data centre customers. For a US reader it is the closest thing to a domestic-scale battery supplier that is not Chinese, and its earnings depend on three things at once: electric vehicle demand, US tax policy, and the price of lithium.
