Samsung Biologics is the world's largest contract manufacturer of biologic drugs by installed capacity. It does not own the medicines it makes. Pharmaceutical companies — including Pfizer, GSK, Novartis and Eli Lilly among its disclosed clients — hire it to run the living-cell bioreactors that produce antibody drugs, and it is paid for capacity and output rather than for sales of a finished brand. Founded in 2011 as a Samsung Group venture into biotechnology, it built out plants at Songdo, near Incheon, faster than any competitor and now rivals Switzerland's Lonza and Germany's Boehringer Ingelheim at the top of the industry. For a US reader the closest analogue is a foundry: it is to biologic drugs roughly what TSMC is to chips, selling manufacturing slots to companies that design the product but do not want to build the factory.
