LG Electronics is best known in the United States for refrigerators, washing machines and OLED televisions, but that description now understates the company. Its largest and most profitable division makes home appliances and air conditioning, where it competes with Whirlpool, Samsung and increasingly with Chinese manufacturers, and where its commercial HVAC business has become a direct beneficiary of data centre cooling demand. Its television business is large, low-margin and under sustained pressure from Chinese panel makers. Two other divisions matter more than their current size suggests: vehicle components, which supplies infotainment, telematics and electric powertrain parts to global automakers and has grown into a multi-trillion-won order book, and business solutions, covering commercial displays and robotics. It exited smartphones entirely in 2021 after years of losses. It also holds a controlling stake in LG Display, the panel maker, which consolidates into its accounts and has been a persistent drag. For a US reader it is closest to Whirlpool and Sony combined, with an automotive supplier attached, and its shares have long traded at a discount that reflects the mix rather than any single business.
