Samsung Electronics to buy ₩15tn of stock for employee share awards

Samsung Electronics (005930) will buy 53,285,968 of its own common shares for ₩15.0tn between 24 August and 21 November, the company said in a filing to the Financial Services Commission and the Korea Exchange on Friday.

The board resolved the purchase on 21 August with all five independent directors present and none absent. Samsung will buy on the open market through Samsung Securities, Shinhan Investment and KB Securities, under a daily order cap of 7,321,653 shares.

The filing settles two earlier answers to the exchange, on 24 June and 23 July, in which Samsung would neither confirm nor deny a report that it planned ₩90tn of buybacks over three years. The stated purpose is share-based compensation for employees, not cancellation.

The ₩15.0tn commitment equals 33% of the ₩45.2tn Samsung earned in net income in FY2025.

Samsung held 79,870,794 common shares in treasury before the decision, 1.4% of the class, and the filing records ₩13.2tn already spent on treasury purchases since the start of this financial year.

The share count was sized on the 21 August close of ₩281,500. The shares closed at ₩257,000 on 28 August.
