Samsung C&T (KRX:028260) was selected as a strategic partner for a 1.2-gigawatt small modular reactor project in Sweden, the company said Wednesday. The firm signed a joint development agreement with Swedish nuclear technology company Studsvik and GE Vernova Hitachi Nuclear Energy to design, procure and construct four 300MW BWRX-300 reactors at an existing nuclear site.
The project represents Samsung C&T's entry into European SMR development and its first participation in a large-scale reactor construction outside Asia. Studsvik will retain operational and regulatory responsibility for the site, while Samsung C&T and GE Vernova handle engineering and construction.
Samsung C&T has not previously disclosed SMR work in Europe at this scale. The group's construction division has focused on semiconductor fab and data centre projects in recent years, with FY2025 revenue of ₩40.74 trillion.
The arrangement gives Samsung C&T access to the growing European clean energy market as nuclear policy shifts. A Reuters report said the company has been pursuing advanced reactor technology partnerships to diversify its engineering book beyond Asia.
