Shinhan Financial launches youth repayment aid program

Shinhan Financial Group (KRX:055550) launched a youth loan repayment assistance program Wednesday, offering rebates up to ₩3 million for young borrowers with clean repayment records. The initiative uses ₩200 billion of a ₩1 trillion allocation to the Shinhan Micro-Finance Foundation, part of a push toward retail banking that emphasizes credit building.

Eligible young borrowers can receive partial repayment rebates after three or more years of on-time payments on foundation loans. The program targets self-employed individuals and micro-business owners aged 18-39 with recent loan originations. First disbursements begin October 12.

Shinhan Financial's market capitalisation was ₩53.8 trillion at Thursday's close. First-half net interest margin of 2.44% reflected deposit competition and lower-for-longer interest rates. Credit costs remained benign at 8 basis points of average loans, near historical lows.

The foundation operates lending programs in collaboration with government ministries, which often gate subsidy programs on borrower behavior rather than balance-sheet strength.
