Samsung executives get record 317 stock award contracts

Samsung Electronics filed a disclosure Wednesday showing it granted 317 stock-compensation contracts to executives in 2026, nearly double the 175 contracts granted in 2025, as the company shifted incentive compensation from cash bonuses to equity awards. The stock awards vest over four years and tie executive wealth to long-term shareholder returns.

The spike reflects a broader shift in Korean corporate compensation as labour unions push for guaranteed bonuses tied to earnings, prompting companies to replace cash commitments with equity that can fluctuate. Samsung's shift follows labour disputes over performance-linked bonus formulas.

Samsung Electronics' market capitalisation was ₩1,461.6 trillion at Thursday's close. Operating income for the first half of 2026 was ₩60.5 trillion, carrying a 76% operating margin. Executive stock ownership, disclosed separately, increased from 2.1% to 2.8% of the company over the year.

Equity-compensation trends in Korea track US practices, where restricted stock and options have comprised 40-60% of executive pay for two decades.
