HD Hyundai wins award for liquid CO2 shipping technology

HD Hyundai (KRX:267250) won an industry award Wednesday for its liquid CO2 carrier ship technology, recognised by peers as an engineering breakthrough in carbon-neutral shipping as IMO regulations tighten carbon intensity requirements through 2030. The design compresses CO2 into liquid form and transports it in specialized hull compartments, opening a new cargo segment.

HD Hyundai has signed letters of intent for two liquid CO2 carriers valued at roughly ₩1.2 trillion. The technology addresses growing demand from carbon-capture companies and industrial firms seeking transport for CO2 used in enhanced oil recovery and beverage carbonation.

HD Hyundai's market capitalisation was ₩16.9 trillion at Thursday's close. First-half 2026 revenue of ₩5.4 trillion carried 13.5% operating margin as new ship deliveries and service contracts offset project-delivery timing. Order backlog stood at ₩25.0 trillion.

Shipping decarbonization is driving technology differentiation as yards compete on carbon intensity and alternative-fuel carrier designs for ammonia, hydrogen and CO2.
