Korea inflation rises to 3.1%, exceeds 3% threshold

Korea's consumer price inflation reached 3.1% in August 2026, crossing the 3% threshold for the first time in four months as agricultural prices rose on summer drought and energy costs climbed on global crude prices, the Central Bank said Wednesday. Core inflation excluding food and fuel remained stable at 2.3%, suggesting headline pressure is temporary.

The inflation reading narrows the Bank of Korea's interest-rate decision space as policymakers balance growth support against price stability. Official guidance signals no immediate rate moves are planned, but forward guidance is shifting toward vigilance.

Korea's market capitalisation of the Kospi was ₩2.47 trillion at Tuesday's close. Consumer discretionary stocks (automakers, retailers) underperformed as inflation fears reduced equity valuations. Bond markets repriced higher inflation expectations, pushing the five-year yield from 3.12% to 3.18%.

Seasonal agricultural inflation has triggered above-trend CPI readings in Korea for four consecutive years, prompting debate over base-effect distortions.
