Hanwha Defense showcases K9 self-propelled howitzer upgrades

Hanwha Aerospace (KRX:012450) presented K9 howitzer modernization concepts to operator nations Wednesday, proposing digital fire-control and drone reconnaissance systems that would extend platform service life by adding 20 years without full platform replacement. The K9 User Club attracted defence ministers from seven operator nations plus observer countries.

Hanwha's upgrade roadmap includes AI-assisted targeting, digital logistics, and command-and-control integration, marketed as lower-cost alternative to purchasing new systems. K9 platforms in service number roughly 2,500 across operator nations and South Korea itself.

Hanwha Aerospace's market capitalisation was ₩54.0 trillion at Thursday's close. First-half 2026 operating income of ₩177 billion reflected timing of defence contract deliveries and international sales mix. The K9 program generates 15-20% of group revenue.

Defence-industry upgrade cycles are becoming a primary margin opportunity as procurement budgets emphasize sustainment over new platforms.
