NAVER runs South Korea's dominant search engine and, unusually among world markets, has held that position against Google for two decades. Search in Korea works differently: NAVER answers queries mostly from content held inside its own walls, including blogs, user forums, shopping listings and a news aggregator that makes it the country's most important distributor of journalism. Advertising against that traffic is the profit engine. Around it sit four other businesses: commerce, where NAVER operates a marketplace that hosts hundreds of thousands of small Korean merchants rather than holding inventory itself; fintech, through the NAVER Pay wallet; cloud and enterprise software, including a Korean-language large language model; and content, chiefly the WEBTOON digital comics platform, which is separately listed in New York. It also owns half of LY Corporation, the Japanese group behind the LINE messenger, through a joint venture with SoftBank that has been the subject of political friction in Tokyo. For a US reader the closest description is a domestic Google and Shopify combined inside one country, with the market share advantages and the regulatory exposure that implies.
