HD Hyundai Heavy Industries will build four LPG carriers for an unnamed shipowner based in Oceania. The contract is worth 515.4 billion won, about $370 million at the contract-date rate. That equals 2.93% of the company's FY2025 revenue. Work runs from August 2026 to March 2030. HD Hyundai Heavy holds a down payment on signing. It collects the rest as construction progresses. The filing does not name the buyer or say which Oceania country it is based in.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries operates the world's largest shipyard, at Ulsan on Korea's south-east coast, and is the core shipbuilding company of the HD Hyundai group. It builds the vessels that carry global trade and energy: container ships, crude and product tankers, and the liquefied natural gas carriers that are its most valuable product, where Korean yards hold a near-duopoly with a handful of Chinese competitors. It also builds warships and submarines for the South Korean navy, which has become newly important as the United States looks for allied shipbuilding capacity it does not have at home. The business model is unusual for a manufacturer: ships are ordered years before delivery at prices fixed at the time of order, so today's revenue reflects contracts signed two or three years ago and today's orders determine profits in 2028 and beyond. That lag is why the industry's earnings turn long after its order book does, and why the collapse of the mid-2010s took most of a decade to work through. For a US reader there is no domestic equivalent at this scale; the nearest comparisons are Fincantieri or the Japanese yards, though neither has HD Hyundai's LNG position.
