Kia prepares Mexico pivot as US tariff negotiations progress

Kia (KRX:000270) is reconsidering its Mexico factory strategy as US-Mexico trade negotiations move toward tariff relief for automotive goods, according to industry sources. The automaker had shifted K4 sedan production to Mexico to avoid US tariffs, but potential tariff reductions could justify rerouting some output back to Korean facilities for US export.

Mexico's economy minister met with US commerce officials Wednesday to negotiate tariff terms on automobiles and steel. Tariff relief for Mexico-sourced vehicles would narrow the cost advantage that prompted Korean makers to localize assembly.

Kia's market capitalisation was ₩49.7 trillion at Thursday's close. First-half 2026 operating income of ₩1.2 trillion reflected higher mix of premium EVs and cost-reduction programs offsetting volume pressure. Mexico plant utilization stood near 65% as output shifts tracked tariff incentives.

Mexico tariff uncertainty is creating asset-allocation volatility for Korean automakers, which previously committed to localization investments contingent on tariff barriers persisting.
