This is Kia's monthly wholesale sales disclosure for August 2026, not an earnings release — every revenue and profit line in the filing is blank. Global sales totaled 266,675 vehicles, up 5.0% from August 2025 but down 10.5% from July 2026. Domestic (Korea) sales were the weak spot: 40,213 units, down 26.4% month over month and 7.6% year over year. Overseas sales were 225,413 units, up 7.4% year over year but down 7.1% from July. A small specialty segment (military and commercial specialty vehicles) rose 93.9% year over year to 1,049 units. Year-to-date through August, cumulative global sales reached 2,196,123 units, up 4.4% versus the same period in 2025 — domestic up 7.0%, overseas up 3.7%. The filing itself flags these as preliminary figures that may still be revised.
Kia is South Korea's second-largest automaker and, together with Hyundai Motor, one half of the world's third-biggest car group by volume. Hyundai Motor owns roughly a third of Kia, and the two share platforms, engines and purchasing while competing for customers under separate brands and dealer networks. Kia sells around three million vehicles a year, with the United States its most profitable market; the Telluride and Sportage SUVs and the EV6 and EV9 electric models are its best-known nameplates there. It builds cars in Korea, the US state of Georgia, Mexico, Slovakia and India, and its Georgia plant makes it directly exposed to US trade policy on imported vehicles and parts. For a US reader, Kia sits roughly where Honda or Nissan do in the competitive landscape, but with a narrower geographic spread, a heavier reliance on North American profit, and an unusually high share of group earnings flowing back to a Korean parent structure that is itself under pressure to reform.
